Rum from Austria
Who would have thought it, but Austrian rum has a long tradition and "Inländer Rum" is one of the protected Austrian spirits specialities. The Inländer Rum is an invention from the 19th century. At that time sugar cane, which is traditionally needed for the production of rum, was rare in Austria. However, a pharmacist from Krems on the Danube used his expertise and developed the Inländer Rum as we know it today from a mixture of ethyl alcohol, water and various flavours. The name "Inländer Rum" served at that time to distinguish it from imported rum varieties and today guarantees the authenticity of this Austrian speciality.
