The Yamazaki Distiller’s Reserve is a relatively new Japanese release from Suntory’s Yamazaki distillery which follows the recent movement towards non-age statement whiskies (NAS).
Containing a motley mix of malts and 3 different cask types varying in age and styles, this expression sure is different and delivers in spades. It originates from ex-Bordeaux wine casks matured for at most 10 years, older Sherry matured malts approx. twenty years old that bring depth and maturity, and young whisky aged in Mizunara(Japanese Oak) casks for a twelve-year period to enrich the flavours with a Japanese spicy note.
Overall Yamazaki has created a superb expression rich in dried fruits, berries, vanilla and spice.
NOSE: Quite attractive, a little on the soft side but nicely fruity (strawberries with cream, red berries, lemon candy) with some coconut flakes. A lot of vanilla ice cream. Interestingly there’s also the typical oriental touch, with sandalwood, floral notes, incense and ginger
PALATE: sweet and spicy. Peaches on syrup, raspberries and honey. Redcurrants. Again mixed with spicy oak, cinnamon and ginger. Becomes fairly zesty towards the end.
FINISH: the zesty notes are joined by some tannins but the honey is still there as well.
