While single malt whisky is generally known, few know how great a good single grain whisky can taste. Single Grain Whiskies are relatively rare, as "Grains" are usually made into blends and are therefore rarely enjoyed as Single Malt. Even rarer is a bottling whose main ingredient is corn. The corn - in contrast to the more common wheat - gives the whisky a full body and intense aromas. After several very exclusive vintage editions of Coffey Grain (named after the Coffey still), the Japanese producer Nikka has decided to create a permanent version of this whisky to make its charming character accessible to a wider audience of connoisseurs.
The Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky is intense on the nose, with notes of lemon, vanilla and strong menthol. The body is surprisingly uncomplicated, a fruity whisky with notes of hazelnuts, coffee bean, sea salt and a slight smokiness. The interplay of aromas is challenging, but is beautifully balanced by the menthol. The Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky is an experience worth exploring.
